Boosted odds for The Conference League final

Since Fiorentina and West Ham United last won a major UEFA trophy in the 1960s, a long wait will end as they meet in the UEFA Europa Conference League final in Prague. The similarities don't stop there, as both teams finished outside the European qualification places in their respective domestic leagues, so winning here is their only way back to Europe next season.

The Italian team has already made history by becoming the first team to reach the final of all four major UEFA competitions and will now attempt to improve their record in UEFA finals after lifting a European trophy just once in four previous attempts. The Violets appear to have overcome their Coppa Italia disappointment against Inter Milan in late May, as they come into this prestigious event on the back of two consecutive Serie A wins to conclude their domestic season.

The European stage has been the clear highlight of West Ham's season after they finished 14th in the Premier League, winning only two of their final seven league matches. They have had an easier progression to the final than their opponents, but have historically struggled against Italian teams, so they will need to break new ground to lift a second European title.

Older Hammers fans will remember a pair of 1-0 defeats in the 1975 Anglo-Italian Cup, the only times these two teams have ever met, and it's been a similar story since then as they lost twice to Palermo in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup, their only other encounter with an Italian outfit. No matter who wins, the victor will mark football history a little more with their imprint. A meeting that neutral spectators should follow, as it promises its share of surprise and twists.
