ATP Genève - Joran Vliegen schakelt nummers 1 van de wereld uit in kwartfinale dubbelspel

Aan de zijde van de Uruguayaan Ariel Behar behalade Vliegen in de tweede ronde een prestigieuze overwinning tegen de nummers een van de wereld Marcelo Arevalo en Mate Pavic. De Salvadoraan en de Kroaat, die binnenkort hun titel verdedigen op Roland Garros, moesten het hoofd buigen met 7-6 (7/5) en 6-4. De match duurde een uur en negentien minuten.

Vliegen boekte afgelopen weekend in het Italiaanse Turijn met zijn Uruguayaanse partner nog zijn tweede Challengertitel van het jaar. Hun tegenstanders in de halve finale worden de Oostenrijker Lucas Miedler en de Portugees Francisco Cabral.

De 31-jarige Vliegen, 58e op de ranking, is de enige overgebleven landgenoot op de tabel in Genève. In de eerste ronde van het enkelspel verloor Zizou Bergs (ATP 49) in twee sets (6-2 en 6-3) van de Hongaar Marton Fucsovics (ATP 134).

Yanina Wickmayer va mettre un terme à sa carrière de joueuse de tennis. L'Anversoise de 35 ans disputera Roland-Garros, dont le tableau final débute dimanche, et Wimbledon (30 juin - 13 juillet) avant de quitter le circuit, a annoncé vendredi matin celle qui a atteint le 12e rang mondial en avril 2010 et le dernier carré de l'US Open en 2009.
