In this picture taken on January 29, 2019, Turkish skier Berkin Usta takes part in the CAS Karakoram International Alpine Ski Cup, at the Pakistan Air Force-owned and operated Naltar Ski Resort, some 25km north of Gilgit in Pakistan's remote mountainous north. Dozens of skiers in late January took part in a rare international competition in Pakistan, which boasts some of the world's highest mountains but remains off-piste for most winter sportsmen due to years of insecurity and lack of infrastructure. The Naltar Ski Resort in the Karakoram mountain range where the competition took place is at the heart of Pakistan's attempts to build up its winter sports tourism industry. AAMIR QURESHI / AFP

Turkse olympische skiër Usta komt om het leven bij hotelbrand

De aftredende voorzitter Thomas Bach van het Internationaal Olympisch Comité bracht zijn medeleven over. "Berkin leefde zijn olympische droom door deel te nemen aan de Winterspelen van Peking. Onze gedachten zijn bij hun familie en vrienden."

Voor de Olympische Spelen van 2022 sprak Usta over zijn levenslange droom om aan de Spelen deel te nemen. "Ik heb het recht verdiend om mijn land te vertegenwoordigen op de Olympische Spelen in Peking. Ik wil mijn beste prestatie leveren en laten zien dat we tot de beste ter wereld behoren", sprak Usta, die in peking niet finishte op de slalom en als 43e eindigde op de reuzenslalom.

Red Flames - Elisabet Gunnarsdottir veut "aller de l'avant" face à l'Angleterre et "bâtir la confiance"

Elisabet Gunnarsdottir garde "un bon sentiment" malgré les deux défaites essuyées pour ses débuts à la tête des Red Flames, contre l'Espagne (3-2) et le Portugal (0-1). À l'approche d'une double confrontation avec l'Angleterre (vendredi à Bristol et mardi prochain à Louvain), en Ligue des Nations, la sélectionneuse s'est dite "enthousiaste". Elle veut "aller de l'avant", comme elle l'a expliqué en conférence de presse à Tubize, mardi.

Tadej Pogacar doet zondag (6 april) een gooi naar een tweede overwinning in de Ronde van Vlaanderen. Op de website van UAE Team Emirates-XRG blikt de Sloveense toprenner dinsdag vol verwachting vooruit.

E3 Saxo Classic - Operatie en gipsverband voor Dries Van Gestel

Dries Van Gestel is maandag in het ziekenhuis van Herentals geopereerd aan de polsbreuk die hij vorige week vrijdag opliep in de E3 Saxo Classic, zo maakte zijn team Soudal Quick-Step dinsdag bekend. Van Gestel moet gedurende drie weken een gipsverband dragen, waarna zijn vooruitgang opnieuw geëvalueerd zal worden.
